If given the choice to receive a smartboard or a document camera, which technology would you choose first and why??

I have only used a smartboard, but I think it has more capabilities than the document camera. The students are more involved with the smartboard as they are up writing on the work and making it more interactive. For instance, if you put student writing under the document camera, the students can read and discuss it. If you scan the writing into the smartboard the students can write on it and make suggestions or rearrange words.

I think the DC is interactive too! You can write on the document, that is being projected, while everyone watches. I sure do want one of these!!!

I went to a workshop on both and I know the dc is easier to use right away. I think you are lucky to get any technology. I am trying to win a DC and I wrote a grant for a SB.

If anyone is considering purchasing an interactive whiteboard, I would suggest considering our AVerPen solution. This will officially be available this coming September, and we will be releasing more information about it soon, but you can get an overview here:

In my classroom, I have a Promethean ActivBoard 2 and an AverVision CP300 document camera. I received my document camera at the beginning of last school year and the interactive whiteboard a few months later.
While I am very thrilled to have both tools, I would consider the document camera to be the more immediately beneficial tool for most teachers. The learning curve is almost non-existent, and the start-up costs are minimal in comparison to the interactive whiteboard. For the cost of my one ActivBoard, I could outfit nearly a half dozen other classrooms with document cameras and projectors. The expense of the whiteboard and the complexities of use reduce its viability for most of the teachers in my school. I would LOVE to give every classroom a document camera, however. |

DC! The Smartboard is cool, but many of its features can be also be accomplished by projecting other software/web apps. However, the DC allows the students to clearly see what the teacher is demonstrating, as well as share their work and learn from each other. If you've ever held up a handout, book, or picture, and said, "Well you can't see it, but there's..." you need a DC!

I just got a proj. device mounted in my classroom this summer so this fall no more running to find the one on a cart! I'm so excited!!! |

So, is there any benefit to having both?

I had a DC at my last school, but will only have a SMARTboard at my new school. When you say that you can scan a document, would that be scanning onto your computer and then projecting? The DC seems so much more dynamic. As a writing teacher, I like to circulate the room, find examples to share and put them up under the DC. The students enjoy learning from each other.

Never scanned a document into smartboard. We do not have the scanner but that would be great to have the kids edit the work right there and then.

It seems like a dc is so easy to use right away. I went to a smart board training and the presenter did not even know how to do everything.

Our school is slowly aquiring more of both. I think more teachers would readily appreciate the DC. After I went to training I had my camera up and running by the end of the day and I have used it everyday since! Smart boards ( I have one coming) I think are a bit more overwhelming. I can not believe how much more efficient teaching is having a dc!!

I've had both and the DC is my first choice -- hands down. I put the DC more into the *need* category and the SB more into the *want* category. The SB does have some great bells and whistles, but the DC provides more than that.
There are the obvious reasons to use the DC: no more buying/making/cleaning transparencies; the ability to instantly project student work for editing; remediating on the fly (as opposed to the overhead which requires advance notice so transparencies can be made). But I consider the DC to also be a classroom management tool. Take one of my 8th grade math classes, for example. Just turning my back to write on the white board invites a frenzy of conversations. The DC keeps me facing them, which is crucial to keeping them on task. It's funny how admin thinks the SB is so cool and that we would all prefer that, but I'm not sure how many teachers have ever been asked. I finally emailed my principal to let him know I'd prefer a $700 DC over the $2000 SB. *PLEASE* save $1300 on me! LOL |

quote:Just shared info with our building tech committee today on the AVerPen. We are looking to get DC's first. We have 3 Activeboards in our bldg and all 3 teachers also have DC's. We want to investigate the AVerPen so are looking for an upcoming convention in MN where they will be available to use/test/investigate/learn more about/see in action. |

We have one DC and one SMARTboard in our school...both are high demand, but the teacher population knows more about the SMARTboard than the DC.
I just started using the DC in my classroom for our map unit (2nd grade). I must say, we had a BLAST with the document camera! Instead of running worksheets for the kids that had great activities on them, I instead slipped them into a page protector sleeve, grabbed a dry erase marker, and we completed the activities, with the students coming up to the cart, drawing on the paper, with the rest of the class watching. You would've thought we were watching the best movie ever! They ooohed and aaahhhed and had a blast completing our activities! I felt more environmentally conscious :) as well as pretty darn creative! The DC is more portable than the SMARTboard, although the touch technology is pretty cool on there. I have to share this from my class: erasing the page protector (sheet still inside) my class told me it was a "hurricane" happening, since my movements were quick and a little blurry while erasing quickly. I think they might have enjoyed that just as much as our other activities!!! Unfortunately, we only have the one DC in the school and it seems to live in the fifth grade :( Would love to have my own! ![]() |

I have both and honestly, not just because it am on this website, I would rather have my doc cam. I use it non-stop through out the day from math to science to everything in-between. I use it to take pictures of student work, to record presentations, to simply display a worksheet etc. I do love my smartboard but could not live without my doc cam!

The DC would also be my first choice. I like to evaluate technology in terms of what it can do to help and enhance my teaching, along with ease of use, preparation time, and cost. I think a DC comes out ahead on all these.
