How are you projecting? |
Lead | ||
|
As we work to get more and more document cameras at our school, the issue comes up of how to project the images. Another expense to factor in is the purchase of a data projector to use along with the document camera. Have any of you who are using document cameras found an alternate, and less expensive way of projecting the images? What about using the AverKey? Is anyone having success using that? Thanks for your input.

I have only used a projector with my document camera and that is a challenge because of the cost. I haven't tried the averkey but I think it would be an option for displaying on the TV--unfotunately the images are small and hard to see on the TV.

I've had two different setups.
1. Projector. Bulb fried four times. Projector died after 8 months. 2. TV - 42inch - $250. The 300AF+ has an RCA Video-out, so I just pumped it into the TV. The quality was great, and it lasted me for a number of months after my digital projector went kaput. With the prices of old tube TV's and even some flat-screen TV's dropping so fast, I wouldn't really consider getting a digital projector again. If you look in the right places (pawn shops) you could even find a fairly large screen HDTV for less than $500. My parents actually purchased a 63 inch flat screen HDTV for $850, new, as part of a promotion at Ultimate Electronics because it was an open-box item. |

I've only used mine with my digital projector but mine seems to have had better luck. I love mine and am supposed to be having my SmartBoard installed soon...and if I win a document camera I am not going to have enough time in the day to do all that I want. Last year my 1st graders got so excited by all the different technology projects we were working on that they didn't even want to play at recess anymore!!!

This thread is very interesting. Our school just started talking about how expensive projector bulbs are...$350 each. They seemed to indicate that the school would move towards flatscreen TVs. We definitely would want a large sized TV because otherwise the kids are not going to be able to clearly see the projection. I'm glad that the AverMedia has the ability to feed into a TV.

If you're thinking cost- wouldn't the flat screen tvs be just as or more expensive though? Would that be something that each classroom would have permanently mounted r something on a cart that would be shared?

unknown wrote:My technician and I have been having the discussion of Flat Panel TVs vs Projectors for at least the last 2 years. There are pros/cons to each. For logistics, a TV has a built in TV tuner but in general you're looking at wall mounting in a fixed position. With a projector, you have the option of portability but no TV tuner. However, you can easily attach a VCR or dedicated tuner to the projector, or even add on a USB tv tuner to your computer. In both situations, you need to deal with the wiring compromises. Ideally, I'd love to be able to ceiling mount a projector in the middle of every classroom, allowing the cable runs to off the floor and neatly run and terminated into wall sockets. Presently, we have decided to purchase Dell 1210s Value Projectors which are costing us about $440.00. The replacement bulbs have come down in price to about $200. I don't think I'd buy a classrooom projector that has a replacment bulb cost more than this. Hopefully the price continues to drop. At $440 and with the current quality of even this relatively inexpensive projector, I'd buy these rather than replace an old bulb. In about 3-4 years, it will be more cost effective to replace the entire projector vs fixing or replacing the bulb. We also feel that this gives us time for our teachers to really show who needs more or less technology features without over or under spending to get us started. Interactive boards are great tech toys and tools but it's hard for us to cost justify them with limited funds and no prior use and commitment from our users. |

I've also head about short range projectors that are starting to be released which would allow one to put the projector close to the projection surface which would alleviate some of the cables being in the way. The interavtice white board that I have has an arm that extends above it which keeps the cables out of the way as well which is something to consider when purchases new white boards.
