2nd grade teacher here too. I am very interested in getting this technology for my class. As I entered the lesson plan contest a few months back, I was flooded with different ideas and lesson uses for this technology.

A friend who has just gotten a job at a school was telling me about all the technology in her new classroom. Things such as a document camera, Smart Board, computers, and a projector. I was so excited for her, but I didn't know what a document camera was. So I immediately went to my computer and found some classrooms in action.
I would love to have one in my classroom. Our school is technology behind. We only have two 'old' student computers and a teacher computer and we go to the web to find software to use in the classroom. It would be so great! |

I think it's great that AverMedia has these kinds of promotions to get more document cameras into more classrooms. After entering their previous lesson plan contest it has really sparked my interest in this technology.

I think this contest is great and would love to win one for our school! I am getting some great ideas from reading the posts and it is helping me to think of lots of other ways to use it in the classroom. Our school has one we can check out from the library but it is always is use! My first grade classroom would benefit so much from one! I am going to start looking for grants or into maybe posting a request on the donors choose website and begging for someone to sponser me!!

I think what is beneficial about these grants and contests is the idea that - even if, ho-hum, you don't "win the stuff" - you still get access to great teacher ideas and teacher conversations via these forums. I looked at the lesson plans from the winners for the recent lesson plan contest (wish I would have known about THAT contest) and I'm going to use one of the winning lessons this year to supplement our Holocaust Lit Circles unit. I'm pumped (thank you, Amy Sokoloski of Davidson Middle School). . . we have just one camera and projector available for check-out and I'm going to get "dibs" on the thing right away to ensure I can use it more often. Our PTO paid for the combination since the district hasn't yet justified cameras as a technology expenditure. I'm sure the more administrators we can get to view these tools in action, the more likely we'll be to have them placed in ALL classrooms. It's like having access to an "in-the-moment-info-mercial" because kids act like they're on TV when they use them. I hope these teacher conversations continue... I have a really cool "Thinkmark" I created for active reading (I teach middle school) and as graphic organizers they are a blast to use with the doc.cam during silent reading, read aloud, and lit circles. Our Science department adopted them and they use them for their area now. I would be glad to make them available to interested people to use WHEN you get your doc.cam!

A teacher at our school won $1,000 for her classroom from a different contest. She chose a document camera. I didn't know what one was before this...now I want one! Thank you for running these contests. It pulls me in to look at lesson plans and I really liked the 8th grade Holocaust Eulogy lesson! Thanks.

I love contest too. I agree that we can share ideas and pickup some helpful tips for the classroom. Document cameras are so much fun. I can't wait to use my very own. I've been borrowing a friend's. Most of my summer has been entering contests and filling out grant applications for books and technology.

At NECC, I went to a wonderful session on grant writing with Sheryl Abshire. You might be able to get on the NECC website and see what you can pull up on her. She gave some really good tips. One site she gave was schoolgrants.com. I am going to check it and several other sites out. I have a friend who has gotten a lot funded through donorschoose.com so I am going to check that out too!

This contest is a great forum for teachers to collaborate on all the innovative ways to use a document camera in their classroom. I have gotten some wonderful ideas to try in my classroom. Now all I need is my own document camera!

I agree that the forum is a terrific way to get new ideas for using the doc cam. Every time I check in I find a new trick to use in my classroom or a way to adapt an idea to fit my needs. I really think the doc cam will become a staple in all classrooms, replacing the overhead projector. Maybe as the technology improves and the prices come down, schools will be able to gradually afford more doc cams.

Thanks for the lead. I forwarded it to our media specialist-- She does a lot of integration with my students and I am hoping she considers applying!

No problem! Hope she has enough time to get approval from your district's grant committee.

I think it's www.donorschoose.org
I was just watching TV (and grading papers, of course) and I saw a commercial on the usa network. They recognized a teacher who went to the donorschoose.org website because he was having to pay for paper, pencils, and other supplies for his students. Someone sponsored his classroom and sent them school supplies! There are generous people out there who have the resources that we don't! ![]() quote: |

I wonder, though, since everyone is struggling from the economy, if people even give www.donorschoose.org a thought.

Yes it is www.donorschoose.org, I have been lucky enough to get several projects funded through them. It is based on a point system and it depends on how many points earned as to how high the project can be priced. I love donors choose.
