My only concern with shorter summers, is that this is when I do most of MY training - workshops, inservices, etc., because I don't like taking off days when I have students (if at all possible). So, I try to do all my updates in the summer...

I'm all for shorter summers. The students loose so much during those months. Besides, I really enjoy teaching. It does not feel like a job to me.

I think the kids might have a difficult time being at school later into the summer because they feel summers are theirs, and that they should not be in school. It might be tougher to keep their attention. Our state has a law that schools cannot start in the fall until after Labor Day so we always go into June. Northern MN economy depends on the summer tourism (lakes/resorts/fishing). I'm thinking many parents would love to have shorter summer vacation and more time with their kids in school. I hear many say it is so good to have them back in school..they were ready to send them back!

No shorter summers for me. I think they should start in June and end in September, after Labor Day. We all need a break and it is well deserved. Besides, that is when I do my best planning, work on the computer, my blog, find contests and forums like this one. Who has time to do that during the school year.

If we have shorter summer, students would miss out on great opportunities such as 4-H Camp, Upward Bound programs, band camp, basketball camp, cheer-leading camp, Governors School, etc. This extras outside of regular school gives students experiences and knowledge they would not obtain from school.

Shorter summers | #6 | ||

I think summers are for families. I love teaching, but it leaves me with too little time for my two kids. We use summer to travel, visit family, and spend time together. It is as much a learning time for my kids as school is. |

Love a "modified traditional" schedule | #7 | ||
|
My previous school district had what I considered an ideal school schedule, both from a parent and teacher's perspective. The "modified traditional" schedule had a shorter summer (about 8 weeks), yes, but it also had two weeks off in October, two weeks off around Christmas/New Year, and two weeks off in March. This schedule allowed families many vacation opportunities and provided much needed breaks for both students and teachers!
